Some years ago, my daughter and her partner were staying with me while waiting to move into their new home. Along with them came Katsu, a small hamster with a big sense of adventure.

One day, while my daughter was at work, her partner decided Katsu deserved a bit of exercise and let him have a run around the kitchen. What could possibly go wrong?

At the time, I was upstairs completely immersed in a new design project. When creativity strikes, the rest of the world tends to disappear, so I was happily oblivious to the drama unfolding below.

Suddenly, I heard a panicked scream followed by a loud bang.

I raced downstairs expecting the worst.

Standing in the kitchen was my daughter's partner, looking utterly horrified.

"I think I've killed Katsu!" he wailed in a shaky voice.

Apparently, during his kitchen adventure, Katsu had disappeared behind the freezer. In a panic, the freezer had been pulled away from the wall to investigate.

When we finally found him, Katsu was standing completely rigid. Every single hair on his tiny body was sticking straight out, making him look like a furry little bottle brush.

Thankfully, Katsu was very much alive.

The freezer, however, was not.

Unable to resist a nibble, Katsu had chewed straight through the electrical cable. By the following morning, the freezer had completely defrosted, leaving water all over the kitchen floor and turning my frozen food into a soggy disaster.

To his credit, my daughter's partner felt terrible and arranged for a replacement freezer to be delivered the very same day.

I still have no idea what possessed him to let a hamster run loose in my kitchen, but I eventually forgave him. He promised never to do it again, and thankfully there were no further hamster adventures involving household appliances.

Today, the whole incident is one of those family stories that gets retold whenever we need a laugh.

And Katsu's electrifying encounter became the inspiration for my "Shocked Hamster" design, capturing the exact expression of surprise that appeared on his little face that unforgettable day.

Some designs are carefully planned.

Others are inspired by a hamster, a freezer, and a very expensive nibble.
